Activities

Spicers Peak is an area of outstanding historical interest. Perhaps you may like to explore some of the remains that can still be seen of nineteenth-century life. As these relics have already had to stand the ravages of time, please treat them with respect.

History

Between Spicers Peak and Mt Mitchell of Cunningham’s Gap National Park is Spicers Gap. This gap was used as a route between Brisbane and Warwick in the early history of Queensland.

Unfortunately its importance has been overshadowed by nearby Cunningham’s Gap. The gap was discovered by a local resident called Harry Alphen. Spicers Peak was named after Peter Spicer, Overseer of Convicts at Brisbane between 1826 and 1839. The Aboriginal name for the peak was Barguggan.

There are still some remains of the Spicers Gap road that can be seen. This road was built over eighty years ago. There are also some old headstones, a well and the remains of the old inn. The site of this old inn is several kilometres from the top of the range. It was called the Bindorff Inn and was destroyed by fire in 1875. The surrounding area was later replaced by a fruit farm and guest house. Today most of these relics are overgrown and sadly neglected.
